Under the leadership of Co-Directors Molly Perkins and Marcia McDonnell Holstad, the central purpose of the HIV & Aging SWG is to expand NIH-funded research designed to improve the well being of older adults with HIV and / or decrease the combined adverse effects of aging, HIV, and co-morbid conditions in persons who are growing old with HIV.

The Southern United States has been home to the highest number of PLWH age 50 and older since 2012. By catalyzing high-impact interdisciplinary research that focuses on this population, the HIV & Aging SWG will help to achieve a CFAR central strategic planning goal to expand research in issues critical to HIV in the South. In concert with that goal, the HIV and Aging SWG's long term aim is to establish a national Center for HIV and Aging at Emory University.
