Kudos ...

... to Mariano Kanamori from the University of Miami and his PrEParados research team, who just received the 2020 Abstract of Distinction Award from the Society for Prevention Research.

Team Kanamori's abstract describes the findings of "PrEParados: A Social Network Study of Latino MSM for Facilitating Progress in the PrEP Cascade," a research project funded by CFAR Adelante, a mentored research training program co-sponsored by the Emory and DC CFARs.

... and to Evan Anderson and Nadine Rouphael for leading Emory University's participation in the testing of an NIH/NIAID & Moderna Inc.-developed COVID-19 vaccine.

Under their leadership -- Evan is serving as study PI and Nadine as Emory's Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU) contact PI -- Emory is one of two sites in the nation where the NIAID/Moderna vaccine is being tested (the other is in Seattle). The Emory VTEU is part of NIAID's Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium, which is supporting the trial.

As published on July 14, 2020 in the New England Journal of Medicine ("An mRNA Vaccine against SARS-CoV-2: Preliminary Report", interim analyses suggests that the vaccine is generally well tolerated and resulted in production of both binding and neutralizing antibodies in healthy adult volunteers.

No serious adverse events have been reported to date. Fatigue, headache, chills, myalgia and pain at the injection site were reported by more than half of the volunteers, with systemic adverse events being more common following the second vaccination and in those who received the highest vaccine dose.

     Rama Amara
     Rama Amara

WHO estimates that there are currently about 33 million people living with HIV, pointing to an urgent need to develop a safe and effective HIV vaccine that prevents infection.

We've been working towards that goal for more than 3 decades.

The main goal of this supplement to Rama's R01 -- MVA PRIME/NOVEL TRIMERIC CYCLICALLY PERMUTED ENVELOPE PROTEIN BOOST VACCINES FOR HIV -- is to develop a novel vaccine strategy that prevents infection from a mucosal HIV challenge in rhesus macaques.

     Cecile Lahiri

On August 19, 2020 CFAR and the Emory SCORE are teaming up again for a Virtual Research in Progress (V-RIP) meeting.

At the 8/19/20 meeting Cecile Lahiri will present her research on "Sex Differences in HIV Treatment:
Antiretroviral Toxicity and Side Effects
."

ART has revolutionized HIV care, allowing persons to live longer.
But at what cost?
Spoiler Alert: Emerging evidence shows that there are significant sex differences in toxicity and side effects for some of the ART medications PLUS weight gain and cardiometabolic risk, particularly in women.
