Happy Birthday

... to Jeremy Grey (2/13) Greg Melikian (2/16), Sam Speck (2/16), Tab Ansari (2/18), and David Malebranche (2/20).

Because time is like a spiral, something special happens on your birthday each year: The same energy invested in you at birth is present once again.
(Menachem Mendel Schneerson)

Anne Spaulding

Bonnie and Clyde, Leopold and Loeb, HIV and HCV ... these a just a few historic examples of truly horrific criminal partnerships.

In an effort to eliminate HCV before it kills again, Anne Spaulding (PI) and colleagues from GA Tech and Mass Gen Hospital have received $1.2M in funding from NSF to address policy-level questions such as: "How should state Medicaid programs expand HCV screening and treatment under their constrained budgets?" "What kind of screening policy should be implemented for the general population?" and "How would investments in high-risk groups such as people in prisons reduce HCV transmission?"

      Jessica Sales

Do you know what is good about PrEP? It doesn't rely on participants being able to successfully negotiate mutual monogamy or condom use or even be aware of their partner's HIV risk.

Do you know what is bad about PrEP? Adolescent and young adult women (AYAW) underutilize it. But Jessica Sales has new R01-equivalent funding from the UNC Chapel Hill ACTU (UM1AI069423; Joseph Enron PI) to try and fix that. Her Planning4PrEP intervention will partner with 3 high-volume Title X-funded family planning clinics in Atlanta to develop and evaluate customized PrEP implementation plans for them targeting AYAW.

Divider Rule Focus On... CFAR's new "R-Club"

Focus On...

CFARian Early Stage AIDS Investigators have done, and are continuing to do, an outstanding job of gaining NIH K-level funding over the last few years.

Which means that over the NEXT few years there are going to be a whole heap of CFARians who are ready to convert their K01s and K23s into R01s.

To help make sure that that happens in a timely manner the CFAR Developmental Core will be rolling out "R-Club" activities over the next year. More about each activity as it is deployed.

Workshop Series: R01 Grant Writing for HIV Prevention Science Researchers
The basic- and clinical-science-focused wording of the "NIH HIV/AIDS Research Priorities and Guidelines for Determining AIDS Funding" (NOT-OD-15-137) can be intimidating for social and behavioral science researchers. So the CFAR Developmental and Prevention Science Cores are partnering to create a training series on writing competitive (i.e. fundable) NIH R01 grant proposals specificly targeting HIV prevention science research.
    • Eligibility: New or early stage investigators
    • Convener: Hannah Cooper, Prevention Core Co-Director
    • Date: TBA
    • More Information: Email Hannah (
