      MMWR Defining Moments

On June 5, 1981, the MMWR published a report entitled "Pneumocystis Pneumonia --- Los Angeles" describing PCP found in five previously healthy young gay men in LA. This report was later acknowledged to be the first published account of what would later become known as HIV/AIDS.

Jim Curran and Harold Jaffe, who were both working at the CDC at the time, were part of the original "Kaposi's Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections (KSOI)" task force put together by then CDC Director Bill Foege. In the December 1 (World AIDS Day) 2017 edition of the CDC's "Defining Moments in MMWR History" podcast series, Harold recalls the CDC's investigation and response to the (as yet unnamed) AIDS epidemic.

CFAR Awardees

The CFAR Developmental Core made CFAR-series awards to Mike Goodman and Cecile Lahiri during the Fall 2017 application cycle. Are YOU interested in applying for funding from the CFAR? Our next application deadline is May 1.

Michael Goodman

Michael Goodman, Associate Professor (Epidemiology) is being brought into AIDS research through a CFAR-03 award for "A Pilot Study of Transgender Health in the State of Tamil Nadu, India."

Mike's study will establish the feasibility of (i.e. facilitators of and barriers to) establishing a full-scale, NIH R01-funded cohort of transgender people ("hijra;" India's 3rd gender) for use in researching the interaction between the use of cross-sex hormones and the incidence of cardiovascular disease and cancer, in hijra with HIV.

      Cecile Lahiri

Cecile Lahiri, Assistant Professor (Medicine) is turbo charging her NIH K23 award (K23AI124913) with a CFAR-K award for "Exploring Sex Differences in Suspected HIV-1 Reservoirs."

Here is what we know: HIV hides out in reservoirs.
Here is what we don't know -- but Cecile is going to find out for us: Does reservoir size and viral dynamics differ between men and women? Answering this question has major implications for understanding potential sex differences in the efficacy of HIV cure strategies.

Divider Rule Focus On... NIH Clinical Trials Update

Focus On...
     Clinical Trials

DO YOU PLAN TO APPLY TO THE NIH IN 2018?
Don't miss crucial recent changes to NIH proposal requirements that went into effect on January 25th.

Here is a really good article explaining everything about it -- including the good news (more space for your science in the new forms!). Some of the key points are summarized below:

Definition of Clinical Trial broadened
The new definition is: "A research study in which one or more human subjects are prospectively assigned to one or more interventions (which may include placebo or other control) to evaluate the effects of those interventions on health-related biomedical or behavioral outcomes."

Use this helpful tool to assess if your human subjects study falls under the new definition.

FORMS-E has been deployed
To accomodate the revised definition, NIH released new "FORMS-E" grant application forms and instructions that should be used for all future submissions.

Heads up... Applicants will now need to include a new form in the table of contents — PHS Human Subjects and Clinical Trials Information Form. Warning: This new form may result in up to 12 additional attachments.

From here on out ... DOUBLE CHECK THE FOA!
NIH Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) titles now state whether Clinical Trials are "Required," "Optional," or "Not Allowed." Make sure you are applying to the correct FOA!
Choosing an FOA
Training on the new definition available
On Thursday, February 1, SOM will host a noon workshop on the new definition and rules for NIH clinical trials. See "Events" for more information.
