The National Institutes of Health (NIH) CFAR program has been in existence since 1988. The Emory CFAR was first funded by the NIH in 1998. Funding for the NIH CFAR program was originally provided entirely by the Division of AIDS, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Since 2003, NIH CFARs have been co-funded by NIAID and six other NIH Institutes: the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicines (NCCAM), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
There are currently 19 CFARs located at academic and research institutions throughout the U.S.
